The History of Proctorville Lodge No. 550
The establishment of Proctorville Lodge No. 550, a Masonic lodge in Proctorville, is a story steeped in determination and perseverance. It begins in 1874, with Masons from the Proctorville area submitting a petition to establish a new lodge, initially named Quaker Bottom Lodge. Despite the favorable view of Lawrence Lodge #198, this petition did not materialize for unknown reasons.
In 1880, a second attempt was made. This time, the petitioners faced an unfavorable report from the investigating committee of South Point Lodge, highlighting the stringent requirements and qualifications necessary for establishing a new lodge. However, the Masons' spirit remained undeterred. They continued their quest, guided by Masonic jurisprudence and unwavering dedication.
Finally, in 1885, the Proctorville Masons' dream began to take shape. W.W. Reynolds and Charles M. Beale, who had joined South Point Lodge with the intention of aiding the establishment of a lodge in Proctorville, played significant roles. Their initiation into Masonry and subsequent involvement in lodge activities marked a turning point.
The narrative takes a dramatic turn when a petition to organize a lodge in Proctorville, led by a group of dedicated Masons, faced initial rejection due to procedural issues and internal disagreements. However, this did not deter the proponents, who continued their efforts with renewed vigor.
After overcoming numerous challenges, including gaining the necessary experience and proficiency in Masonic rituals, the Proctorville Masons prepared another petition for dispensation in 1887. This time, their efforts were met with success. The Grand Lodge, recognizing their dedication and fulfillment of requirements, finally granted the dispensation for the establishment of Proctorville Lodge.
The lodge, under the dispensation, was guided by the leadership of Amos Ripley. Despite initial challenges in obtaining the charter, the intervention of influential figures and the Masons' unwavering commitment eventually led to the granting of the charter. Proctorville Lodge No. 550 was formally constituted on November 22, 1888.
The establishment of Proctorville Lodge No. 550 is a testament to the resilience, unity, and dedication of its founders. Their journey, marked by trials, tribulations, and ultimate triumph, remains a significant chapter in the history of Freemasonry in Proctorville.
